"Video Killed the Radio Star"
My earliest memory of MTV was extremely frightening. I refused sleep alone in my bedroom for weeks afterwards. I don't think I'll ever forget it.

I stared at the television with eyes so wide that my mother told my father "I don't think we should be letting Clarity watch this... look at her"

My Father made a motion to turn off the television and I cried out "No! No! I want to see it! I'm okay! I swear!"

yeah right...

Here is that video, If you want a trip down memory lane...

MTV premiered 25 years ago today, August 1st 1981 with the song "Video Killed the Radio Star". New Jersey was the only state that could view this new station but it promised to become world wide.

I stopped watching MTV 10 years ago. Last time I flipped onto that channel, I saw that they didn't actually play music videos anymore. It was just a bunch of trashy reality shows and commercials for cellphone ring tones.

But MTV and I are close in age and I grew up watching it.

This video was my favorite, I was a young girl when it came out but it left a strong impression on me. Does anyone else remember it?

I suddenly feel very old.

Happy Birthday MTV

...even though you are past your prime and haven't improved with age.

I WANT MY MTV!
Video Killed the radio star and later on MTV killed the video star.
Its not what it used to be but it had its day! I was ten years old when Michael Jackson came out with thriller. It scared the shit out of me! I also remember loving "Like a Virgin". Cool videos! It brought back some memories

I have never seen that 'I want my MTV' clip before, I am 32 and have never had MTV ;) Now the Dire Straits song makes much more sense to me though!!

Do you think ther eis a market for a tv station to make money by actually showing videos again? I think I would watch it...well probably not. But I do remember all the good times I had watching that shit.

Closet classics was my favorite, who knew that the Doors and Black Sabbath made little movies about their songs 20 years before MTV?

And if you feel old I must be ancient.

I think MTV2 shows videos, but since I have only regular cable, I can't verify that. I have seen the VH1 Classics channel occasionally and I wish I got that as they show videos from the 80s.

Buzz Cuts used to be cool.

Prior to MTV, I taped Don Kernshir's (??) Rock Concerts and some other video/disco shows. I was 14 or 15 when MTV's first day aired and was instantly hooked. Yesterday, I was late for work because they were televising this "historical day" where they only had a few videos -- Bowie, April Wine, Pat Benatar, "Surface Tension" (Can't recall the artist), Kate Bush (rock video?? uhh...no..performance art?), Talking Heads, Robert Palmer (Ballad of Mary and Johnny, Clues), etc. "Little Susie on the up!"

VH1 classics had a special yesterday. They aired the first 24 hours of MTV. I have it on tape if you want to borrow it! It was really interesting to see how much music videos have evolved since then.

That Thriller video scared the living snot outta me when I was little. We didn't have cable, but it was being shown on regular stations as well for some reason and it freaked me the hell out. I don't think I ever sat through it until I was well into my teens. But of course, Alf scared me too at that age. Hehe.

I just read your last two posts. I love those pictures by Amber, she's soo funny. I especially like how you go from having nice boobs to old saggy granny boobs, hahaha. I hope your shoulder feels better soon.

I haven't watched MTV since the early 90s! Once in awhile I would catch some at a friend's house, though. I certainly wouldn't watch it now where it's all "reality" shows and rap, haha.

The A-HA - Take on Me video was one of my favorites at the time too. I was wanting to be an artist and I thought it was cool how they merged the two worlds...I still like it, but then again, I was an 80's teenager. I pretty much like all 80's music.

And I keep forgetting that Micheal Jackson was cool once. I used to have almost that exact same outfit. (Not Kidding..)

We didn't get M-tv until the mid 80's but the video that stands out the most for me was Hungry Like a Wolf by Duran Duran.

Damn, I miss the 80's...they were like, totally rad! :-)

Oh children! I was 25 when MTV premiered, so my view of it all is very different. . .I recall the John Cougar "Jack and Diane" video with "the punch" at the end. Haven't watched the station for many years now, as the un-reality shows are awful. Thanks for putting the fun videos up!

So, what doesn't make any f'ing sense was that this isn't a normal occurance with them.

I think things just build up and then they overflow in this big freaking mess that isn't even what the subject was about in the first place. Does that make sense?

Anyway, things seem better. I don't know. I'm running around like crazy this week. I'm tired.

"As if they were perfect and knew everything. I can’t stand that kind of self-righteous B.S."

THANK YOU!!!! argh.

Anyway. We send our love to you two.

I didn't get MTV until they stopped playing music videos, so that a-ha video reminds me of an episode of Family Guy...

AAGGGGHHH! For some reason these videos won't load for me! And I'm on T3. Anyway, I'm 32 and also never had MTV or any cable for that matter until I went off to college. So I. have. no. idea. Boohoo.

I had the biggest crush on the singer from A-ha he was soooo cute! I used to re-enact the banging off the walls scene in my hallway. I must have looked crazy!
Before we had Much Music(canada's mtv) I got to watch a show called New Music which is still on today. I swear it molded my young brain into the music snob Iam today!

I also did class plays that re-enacted Thriller, I was the girlfriend. Colin Smith played Michael because he was the best moonwalker and all the zombies came out from either the cloakroom or out from under gym mats.

Have you seen the family guy take on me? it's on you tube look it up!
